Stuff!

by Tyler on September 11, 2014 at 6:14 pm

So, let me put it out there now, I will never spoil what’s coming up.

However, I do like teases. I like putting up images of stuff I’m working on and I think I’m going to try and do more of that across here, Twitter and Facebook. Plus, I think I’m going to start putting in little nods and hints at the content of the next arc in current arcs. There’s a little easter egg for that in the page this week. Super little. Like, really really easy to miss. But it’s there. It’s kind of like what Pixar does, where they hint at future movies in their current releases because they’re always working on 2-3 movies at once. I’m going to start doing the same thing. So keep an eye out!

While I’m at it, I think I’m going to try and put up more of my own non-In the Year of the Rabbit-comic art as well. I mean, I work on this comic pretty much constantly, but I also draw lots of other things.

So, if you’re interested in what I’ve been working on OTHER than the comic, take a look after the page break.

Death of Comments

by Tyler on August 20, 2014 at 12:00 am

You guys remember like…5 months ago when I teased this character? Well he’s here, and it’s a mile a minute from here! Thanks for sticking around!

So, as of today our site will no longer be open to comments on all posts. It was a nice run, though.

We’ve done this for a number of reasons, but mostly it’s a response to the sheer amount of spam we have to go through. It’s ludicrous. We’re looking at a 2000::1 ratio of spam to actual comments, and even with filtering set up that doesn’t guarantee that all legitimate comments are seen or that all spam gets blocked.

On top of that, in this fast-paced, whizbang, internet-capable lifestyle we’re all living in there are much better ways to contact us if you want/need to say something to us about whatever. Plus, if there’s ever a situation where we’re actively asking you guys for comments, we can just turn comments back on for that specific post. No harm no foul.

Don’t take this as us not wanting to hear from you though. We know you’re out there and there’s a solid chance you’ve got questions, so we want  you to know that we WANT to hear from you. Don’t ever feel like you’re bothering us, we’ll happily answer whatever questions you’ve got even if it’s the hundredth time we’ve answered it.

That’s all for now, but I’m hoping to do another Weekly Webcomic recommendation this week, so keep your eyes peeled!

Excited.

by Tyler on August 7, 2014 at 2:22 pm

I’m excited for this arc. I think you should be too.

I mean, I’m excited for every arc. I’m excited for every crazy thing Jimmy and I come up with that I get to draw. The Merchant and that armored fish person from our Merchant chapter? Super fun for me. Some crazy stuff that happens in this chapter? Super fun for me. Some EVEN CRAZIER stuff that happens in the next chapter was so fun I wanted to spoil it for you guys right away. But I didn’t. Because that’d be silly.

But the thing that makes me the most excited is that this arc opens up the larger world we’re creating. Our first two chapters function as self-contained stories. There’s not a ton of character development aside from “This is a samurai, he has a bunny and he doesn’t like bad people” and then hijinks ensue. Conflict and resolution. They each have a beginning, middle and a definitive end. Our Merchant chapter showed you the first hint that there’s maybe another world within this world that we’d be exploring and this chapter will build on the world even further.

Jimmy and I don’t really collaborate on the broad strokes of the story. This is mostly because I want to be surprised about our story too and I think it works well. We talk about where it’s going a lot. but I leave the story details up to Jimmy.  All I really ask Jimmy to do is let me know if I should design a character who’s going to be around awhile. I tend to design throw-away characters as I go, but I’m designing more and more long-term characters these days, and it feels good.

There’s cool new stuff-a-coming and I can’t wait for you all to see it.

p.s. I’m excited.

What a difference 3 years makes…

by Tyler on July 30, 2014 at 1:48 pm

So part of why we even have this kind of a comparison to make already is that I was obsessive about having as much buffer as possible. Because I can’t produce comics as quickly as I’d like (on average about one a week if my life isn’t hectic) we needed space. Plus I was still working out how everything looked, learning how to draw bunnies, and generally realizing that drawing an ongoing, story-based comic is actually a lot of hard work.

So in October or November of last year, as we were finalizing a lot of the website design and when we’d update and all that I went back and looked at our original comics and they just weren’t up to snuff. Shading wasn’t great, linework wasn’t where it needed to be and I wasn’t drawing them in as high a resolution as I should have been. So I redrew every page, fixing a lot of things, but I made sure to hold onto the originals for just such an occasion. This is a selection of what James and I think are the most drastically different from the original pages.

For the pages that we didn’t upload comparisons for, just imagine the pages we did upload…but like 100% less good.

So this is our last post of Takin’ a Break July. Starting next week it’s back to weekly comic business as usual!

We hope to see you there 🙂

AMA – July

by Tyler on July 23, 2014 at 9:00 am

So, because our site is mostly cobbled together using WordPress and plugins and sometimes things work oddly, I wanted to make sure we acknowledged the, so far, only question we’ve received for our July Ask Us Anything endeavor!

On July 9th, Devina asked:

“For AMA -> Do you guys own a bun of your own?”

to which Jimmy replied:

“My wife and I have a four year old Holland lop named Trouble. He’s the inspiration for the comic, but I suspect that he would hate the long road.”

Thanks for the question! It’s not too late, there’s still a few weeks left in the month so if you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers…just like radio shack.

Next week well…we’re still debating, we might actually update every day with our entire first chapter how it used to look, or just a couple pages with comparison. I haven’t really decided yet.

See you next week!
